Overview
I've had the privilege of spending over 5 years at Meta Reality Labs as a product design lead and manager, driving the development of confidential cutting-edge AR wearable glasses experiences across multiple teams. Given much of it is confidential, below is a brief look at the span of work.

Meta's AR Glasses work is still in development and under NDA, but here’s a short [public] glimpse of Augmented Messaging. It allows people to connect via any of the Meta-owned communication channels via standard 2D messaging, but also in new forms of spatial communication. The video here shows a game being spawned from a message, but still retaining the link to the people who sent it.

Highlights of my work at Meta include:

  • 0-1 Incubation Team

    • Led design experience teams for visual search, contextual discovery, spatial memories and augmented messaging.

  • AR Design System

    • Creation and lead of ARDS and later, expansion from AR glasses to all Meta wearables

  • Core System Features Platform Team

    • Managed development of the ‘Home UX’ interfaces, and system features.

  • Meta View App for Rayban Meta Smart Glasses

    • Managed integration of Meta AI, expansion to support upcoming wearable devices, & 3rd party devices.

Highlighted Projects

Project: AR Design System

Role: Creator & Product Design Lead

As our AR Glasses experience teams grew, I recognized the need for a unified design system to ensure scalability, establish a strong identity, enhance user experience and foster consistency.

Starting as a solo initiative initially supporting 10+ experience teams, it evolved into a comprehensive design system, with documentation, and guidance provided by our full-stack dedicated multi-disciplined team. Our mission was to provide holistic guidance for designing spatial product experiences. Helping teams create high-quality products faster, improve user experiences and streamline the product development.

Overcoming Challenges:

  • Navigated the ambiguous nature of spatial design

  • Adapted to constantly changing device constraints

Impact:

  • Improved design efficiency

  • Enhanced product cohesion

  • Strengthened Meta brand identity

  • Elevated user experience across wearable products

  • Informed tech feasibility & needs

My Deliverables:

  • Design Language & Metaphor

  • AR Accessibility studies

  • Component Library

  • Motion Design Framework

  • Icon library

  • Typography

  • Design Tokens

  • Guidelines & Documentation

  • Templates & Patterns Asset Library

  • React Native & Unity Repository

  • Design Tools (Figma Plugins & Structure)

  • Governance Model

  • Team Support

The ARDS team was instrumental in helping to define the product capabilities, specific hardware choices, and showcasing an honest look at what the possibilities were with our given constraints and trade-offs.

Initially focused on AR Glasses, our task grew to transition product-specific design systems or lack-thereof to a scalable and central AR design system across our AR portfolio of products.
